Seagull Guitars

seagull-guitars seagull-guitars seagull-guitars seagull-guitars seagull-guitars

The instruments that make up the Seagull S Series represent some of the world's most outstanding value acoustic guitars.

Their back and sides are made from a three-layer lamination of Wild Cherry wood. With a sound that lands somewhere between the pronounced mid-range tone of a Mahogany guitar and the bright sound of Maple, Wild Cherry has proven itself to be an excellent tone wood and, grown in sustainable forests close to the Seagull factory in La Patrie, Canada, it's also an ecologically friendly choice.

All Seagull guitars feature a wider than average neck (46mm across the nut) and string spacing, making them a popular choice among fingerpicking players. The necks themselves are made from Silver Leaf maple*, hand finished to give an extremely smooth feel, making them a pleasure to play as well as listen to. Seagull S6

Seagull S6 Original

Winner of several awards, the S6 is perhaps the instrument that best represents the Seagull philosophy. Its minimalist appearance belies some sophisticated design features, such as the straight-pull headstock (which reduces lateral string tension, helping to keep the instrument in tune and reducing string breakages), a compensated saddle to keep the tuning correct all the way up the neck, as well as superb quality timbers and hardware.

The S6 offers entry level players the opportunity to experience the great feel and superb sound provided by a hand finished neck, solid Cedar top and genuine lacquer finish, at a price that's second to none.

  • Solid cedar top
  • Wild Cherry back / sides
  • Rosewood fingerboard & bridge
  • Silver Leaf Maple neck

S Series Models & Specifications

Seagull guitars come in three basic body sizes: The 'Standard' size is the original (and most popular) design, based loosely around the traditional dreadnought body shape, but with more rounded shoulders and a slightly smaller sound chamber overall.  The 'Folk' size has a narrower waist and so sits lower on the knee, making it popular with smaller players, who may find larger guitars a bit bulky.  Lastly, the 'Grand' size are parlour guitars, narrow and shallow bodied, but retaining a surprisingly full tone for their size.

Model Lower Bout Body Length Body Depth Scale Length Nut Width

Folk 371mm 495mm 114mm 632mm 46mm

Beyond the S-Series

Seagull M Series GuitarsThe M-Series

The Seagull M-series retain most of the features of the S-Series, but the back and sides of the guitar are constructed from a unique 'sandwich' of two layers of mahogany around a centre layer of Wild cherry, giving slightly more pronounced highs than a typical mahogany guitar.

Constructed in the standard S6 body size, they are available with either a spruce or cedar top. The spruce top model is also available with an optional gloss finish, or as a 12-string.

Seagull Artist Series GuitarsThe Artist Series

Seagull's flagship range, the Artist Series, feature solid backs and are designed and built with the highest level of attention to detail. Mostly hand made, they are available with rosewood, mahogany or maple backs and sides, and an optional cutaway on most models. A distinctive Seagull inlay marks the 12th fret.

Needless to say they sound and look superb, and the optional LR Baggs 'Duet II' dual pickup transforms them into a serious stage guitar.

Tonewoods

The choice of woods used in a guitar's construction goes a long way toward determining its sound - the following timbers are used in the construction of the Seagull S-series guitars:

Wood Used for Properties
Cedar Top A soft, mellow sounding wood, with a reddish-brown hue and a tight, straight, even grain. Traditionally used on Spanish classical guitars, but becoming popular with steel string players, many of whom prefer its 'earthy' tone.
Spruce Top A harder, brighter sounding wood than cedar, spruce also gives the impression of being slightly louder, and is the traditional wood of choice for the soundboards of steel-string guitars.
Wild Cherry Back / sides Wild cherry is one of the brightest tonewoods around, producing excellent, crystal clear trebles and mid frequencies. This provides excellent clarity for fingerpicking styles, and also means that the S-Series guitars can be heard well over the sound of other instruments, making them a good choice for players in bands.
Silver Leaf Maple / Mahogany Necks Both mahogany and maple are extremely hard timbers which, when used to make guitar necks, provide plenty of sustain. Maple is more similar in appearance to the wild cherry back and sides of the S-Series, so is the wood of choice for all models except the 12-string S12+, where the added tension due to the 6 extra strings necessitates the use of mahogany (which has a slightly greater tensile strength), and a mahogany stain finish is applied to the back and sides to make them match
