AER Compact 60 Mobile AmplifierModel: Compact 60 Mobile

AER amplification without the need for mains electricity! Ideal for busking, village fétes and other outdoor gigs, the Compact mobile is essentially identical to the Compact 60 in operation, with the addition of an Auxilliary input to attach a battery powered CD player.

The batteries provide enough power to play without the mains for three to four hours, and the intelligent power control warns when the battery is getting low, preventing embarrassing losses of power during performance, and preventing the batteries being completely exhausted. A cable to connect to a cigarette lighter socket is available seperately

Explanation of Technical Terms

Unsure about some of the technical terms used on this page?  We've explained a few of them below, but if there's anything you still don't understand, please contact us and we will be happy to help!

Obscure knobs and switches:

  • Colour control - switches on a special pre-set eq that gives piezo-electric (under-saddle) acoustic guitar pickups a more natural sound. Cuts the mid-range and boosts the treble.
  • Contour control - adjusts the frequency that's being cut or boosted by the 'bass' control on the eq
  • Mid-sweep control - adjusts the frequency that is being cut or boosted by the 'mid' control on the eq
  • Notch filter - a narrow-band filter enables a particular frequency to be removed (e.g. if it is causing feedback) without radically altering the overall sound
  • Q control - adjusts the width of the frequency band affected by the 'mid' control on the eq, i.e. the number of frequencies either side of the frequency on the 'mid-sweep' control that will be cut or boosted. Higher Q values mean that a narrower frequency range is affected.

Input and output issues:

  • Phantom power - because of the way they work, most condenser microphones need an external voltage source to power them (those that don't use batteries). Dynamic microphones (e.g. ordinary vocal mics) don't need this phantom power, although it won't harm them if it's accidentally left on (N.B. some other types of microphone e.g. ribbon mics can be damaged by phantom power, so be careful)
  • Line level signals - includes most instruments and other audio equipment eg. active (undersaddle) acoustic guitar pickups, magnetic (soundhole) acoustic guitar pickups, electric guitars, keyboards, effects units, CD and tape players.
  • Piezo level signals - instruments with a low output level such as passive acoustic guitar pickups, that need special input settings with extra signal boost
  • Effects loop - allows an external effects unit to be used with the amp / P.A. system, the effects signal can be mixed into the overall sound using the 'effect return' control.

Speaker jargon...

  • Bi-radial - speakers that point in two different directions, spreading out the sound they produce over a wider area.
  • Co-axial - speakers that point in the same direction as each other, projecting sound over a longer distance.
  • Crossover - a device that splits the incoming sound, sending bass frequencies to the bass speakers and mid / high frequencies to the mid / high frequency speakers. The frequency at which they are split is known as the crossover frequency.
