Crafter Guitars

The rising star of Far-Eastern made acoustic guitars, Crafter produce good sounding, solidly built instruments with an emphasis on value for money. Sticking mostly to tried and tested designs, and using better quality timbers normally reserved for higher priced instruments, they leave most of the other 'budget' manufacturers miles behind.

We would strongly encourage any serious beginner to take a good look at Crafter's entry-level solid top acoustics. These instruments have come down in price significantly over the past four or five years, and they produce a much richer sound than any laminate top guitar around the same price range; their sound will also improve further as the wood ages.

Understanding Crafter's Model Numbers

  • The first group of letters is for the body shape / style, eg D for Dreadnought, GA for grand auditorium etc - an E at the end of these letters means that the guitar is electro-acoustic, with a cutaway.  More info on body shapes...
  • The next number shows the trim level - the woods that the guitar is made from, and the style of decoration and inlays. For example, all Crafter models with the number 8 (such as the D-8 and GAE-8) have a spruce top and an abalone soundhole inlay. Models with a number 7 have a cedar top and a wooden soundhole inlay.
  • Finally - an extra 12 at the end means that the guitar is a 12-string, and an L means the guitar is left handed.

The solid sitka spruce or cedar tops on Crafter's "Lite" series guitars use timbers that, for cosmetic reasons, wouldn't normally be used for guitar making.  If you're looking for a starter acoustic that sounds great and is built to last, and you don't mind some slight inconsistencies in the colour of the wood, then this new range offers fantastic value-for-money.

Electric / Acoustic Hybrids - The Crafter SA Series Guitars

Crafter SA-TMVS Electric-Acoustic Hybrid GuitarCrafter's SA (Slim Archtop) series are an exciting new range of Electric / Acoustic hybrid guitars.

Equipped with one Kent Armstrong "Lipstick" pickup - an electric-guitar-style magnetic pickup - and a standard acoustic LR Baggs under-saddle pickup, the SA series guitars allow a player to achieve a wide range of electric and acoustic sounds inside a single guitar.

The original concept behind guitars such as the Crafter SA series and the revolutionary Taylor T5 is that a player has two amplifiers on stage (one electric guitar amp and one acoustic guitar amp), and can switch between amplifiers quickly with an A-B box.  So no more awkward silences between songs as you switch from electric to acoustic guitar, and back again!

The SA series guitars are available in a range of finishes, which - at the time of writing - includes sunburst flame maple (shown left), bubinga, rosewood and transparent black flame maple. Left handed and 12-string models are also available.

Features:

  • Hollow body with an arched top
  • Plays like an acoustic guitar, sounds like both an acoustic and an electric guitar!
  • Kent Armstrong "Lipstick" pickup
  • LR Baggs piezo-electric under-saddle pickup
  • Crafter LRF-Hybrid pickup system with blend control

Pickup Systems

Crafter LR-S Plus Preamp - control panelCrafter LRS-Plus PreAmp with LR Baggs Pickup

In recent years Crafter have put a lot of effort into improving their pickup systems, and the new LRS-Plus preamp is a good example of how their work has paid off.  Well designed active circuitry, and a quality LR Baggs pickup element ensure that there's a decent output level, and low background noise (unwanted 'hiss' and 'hum' sounds) going into an amplifier or PA system - and the tone is surprisingly good for a piezo pickup, especially in this price range.

Features:

  • Active preamp powered by 1 x 9v PP3 battery
  • Volume control
  • Standard 3-band EQ plus a scoop control
  • Phase switch and mute switch
  • Battery check LED
  • Easy-access battery compartment

Other pickup systems currently available on Crafter Guitars:

  • LR-T Pro - a new upgraded pickup, similar to the LR-S Plus system above, but including a built-in tuner.
  • LR-F Hybrid - found on Crafter's SA series electric / acoustic hybrid guitars. A slimline pickup, controls are the same as the LR-S Plus system above, minus the "scoop" control, and with an extra sliding "blend" control to blend the sound between the two different pickups (magnetic and undersaddle).
  • CR-Pro - similar to the LR-S Plus system, but with a 'cable' pickup element.
